Finished one of the most important studies of I+D+i

The latest 15th of November, we went to the day of the Cenit Demeter Consortium (National Strategic Consortium of Technical Research) with the aim of putting end to this project of research and of presenting the main conclusions. Bodegas Martín Códax, together with another 26 companies of the sector and 31 groups of research, took part in this project created to carry out a strategic, multidisciplinary and interregional study of character, in the field of the viticulture to national level and with the aim of generating scientific-technical knowledge in the sector to face up the climatic change. The research rose up from the unrest of the wine sector for the changes that the climatic change can cause on the Spanish viticulture and oenology.

From Bodegas Martín Códax, as the rest of participants, we carry out different projects channeled to obtain scientific knowledge and technological to take measures of adaptation to the new conditions caused by the global heating.
In our case, it stands out:

  • use of different systems of conduction
  • use of different patterns
  • Establishment of different strategies in the use of the water to mitigate the effect of the climatic change
  • Establishment of different strategies of crop orientated to the handling of the vineyard

Fruit of the work of the Cenit-Demeter Consortium were obtained very relevant conclusions as it affects an excess of temperature and less pluviometría to the different compounds of the berry during the ripen and great advances were done in the knowledge of factors to work, in the improvement of the fermentative process, in every climate in the handling of the vineyard in techniques of analysis, in the obtaining of a cellar with a great persistence of foam, in the optimization of the treatment of waste waters and in the reduction of emissions of CO2 in the elaboration of the cork.

The main extracted changes of the study and confirmed by the winemakers are:

  • Progressive trend towards the increase of the average temperatures throughout the century, especially in the months of summer.
  • Generalized trend towards a smaller annual accumulated precipitation.

As for the main conclusions generated about the field of the viticulture, which the research of Martín Códax integrated into, a very complete study was carried out in order to know different strategies of management of the vineyard in the adaptation to the climatic change and it was observed that the climatic change affects especially the Mediterranean area. In this aspect itself it also worked in the viticulture of accuracy, through the use of terrestrial sensors that allowed to incorporate the data in a system SIG and to classify like this the vineyards on with the vigor allowing improving the management of treatments against plagues, subscribers and the classification of the grape harvest in origin.
