Do you want us to tell our new R+D+i project?

In Bodegas Martín Códax we’ve started a new project in order to improve our company sustainability. But, at the same time, we will be recovering a tradition that’s been alive in the Salnés Valley for centuries.

This new project is based on the use of seaweeds to fertilize our vineyards. The objective is to generate organic matter by using the seaweeds and some derivates from the grape production (we mean, for example, the grape skins) in order to be able to reduce the dependence of some chemical elements and to close the productive cycle without being dependent of external resources as well.

This project is included in the winery general plan for improving the sustainability. And it`s come up when we realized the big fertilizer brands had started to add mineral fertilizers from the seaweeds because they work as activators of the soils own fertility. Moreover, we were already looking for different materials that enabled us to reduce the use of mineral nitrogen as fertilizer due to the environmental problems it causes. And we’ve thought the traditional practice of using organic matter would be the most environmentally friendly alternative.

So, we’ve already started this new challenging research by selecting some seaweed from the Vilanova beach and the research is starting to be implemented this spring.

We will wait for the first results!
